As a writer, it’s not all that uncommon to be asked what
which genre you write. A fairly straight-forward question, you’d think; be it
romance, or thrillers, or crime, etc. Yet there are authors who like to write
in multiple genres, with J. K. Rowling AKA Robert Galbraith immediately
springing to mind, with first a children’s magical series, then a gritty
tragicomedy (or whatever you want to call it), and then a crime novel.
I’m another writer that likes to experiment and try my hand at
different things. If you were to ask me which genre I write in, I wouldn’t
really be able to give you a direct answer. So far, I have had three stories
published, but they are all in different genres with vastly different word
counts.
Popping the Cherry is my first
attempt at Young Adult fiction, a cross between chick-lit and romance, and it
is my first full-length novel. Prior to that was For One Night Only, a short contemporary romance story with such a high
heat level that I had to create the alter-ego of Allie A Burrow in order for it
to be featured in the Serviced anthology. And let’s not
forget the story that got me published in the first place, Christmas is Cancelled, my Christmas-themed contemporary
romance novella.
All three of these stories are contemporary and they all have a strong romance element, and I’ve been told that there is also humour in my writing so maybe that makes me a contemporary romance author with rom-com tendencies? Ummm... what about the fantasy trilogy I have planned then? And the children’s adventure stories I want to write, and the paranormal stories I cannot wait to have a go at? At the moment, the only thing I really know for sure is that I don’t want to write crime novels, historical romances, nor horrors. Pretty much everything else is fair game if the right idea strikes and I believe I can do the story justice.

My immediate future sees me extending my current lines
though, with book two in my Popping the Cherry series already underway, to be followed by
book two in Christmas is Cancelled series, and I
also want to get another contemporary romance as Allie A. Burrow out in the new year,
either novella or full-length depending on how it goes. After that comes book 3
in both of my series which will take me well into the next year, when I will no
doubt be chomping at the bit to return to some of the other half-completed
manuscripts languishing on my hard drive, assuming I can leave them alone for
that long. It’s very much a case of too many stories and not enough time!
Is genre-jumping a good thing or could it potentially be
harming my author brand by spreading myself too thin? The honest answer is, I
don’t know. It’s too early to tell right now, but I am already aware that I may
need to put my children’s adventure series out under a different name—maybe
even my real name—but it’s still so far down the pipeline that I’m not going to
concern myself with it, especially as it may never happen.
How about you? Do you specialise in one genre, maybe even
one sub-category of genre, or do you like to mix it up? Which genres are you
most likely to have a go at, and on the flipside, which ones won’t you write?
Would you perhaps like to write in other genres but worry about dilution of
your brand? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
